The 5-week Flying Start bootcamp prepares new apprentices to enter their workplace ready for their first challenges. We cover the basics of the software development life cycle and begin to understand the role of a software developer. As well as learning the basics of programming in HTML, and Javascript apprentices will take on coding challenges and gain practical experience of the entire software stack. · Week 1: This week introduces the SOLID principles, the practice of test-driven development (TTD) and Object Oriented programming (OOP). Apprentices will create a series of objects in their programme and then write the code so these objects interact with each other. · Week 2: This week introduces the idea of Object Relational Mapping. We start to use SQLite a simple database,and build on our understanding of OOP to build applications that can persist their state. We also introduce the RESTful design for APIs. · Week 3: We turn our attention to the browser in this week. Working with Document Object Model (DOM) manipulation and programme state apprentices are challenged to work with events and create a programme that is event driven. · Week 4: Time to put it all together and build a RESTful application. Our Airbnb clone will draw on all the concepts covered in the first three weeks. Apprentices work toward a full stack app, with tests. · Week 5: Apprentices demonstrate the new skills they have learnt in the last month and put together a final project that must show: A design phase, a testing strategy, a database, a server and a frontend.

This first module consolidates the Flying Start Bootcamp by revisiting and extending the following: ● Object-oriented programming ● RESTful Web servers with sessions ● Object Relational Mapping (ORM) ● HTML, CSS and Javascript By the end of this module, apprentices will have proficiency with databases, algorithms and REST APIs. Through a mixture of interactive seminars, pair programming and independent exercises, apprentices will cover basic SQL syntax; modelling one-to-many and many-to-many relationships in relational databases; data structures, including two-dimensional arrays, queues, stacks and lists; searching algorithms, including bubble sort, binary search and selection sort; decomposition, pattern recognition and abstraction.

Modern Browser APIs uses a mixture of on-the-job training and a two-week bootcamp to get apprentices to exam-standard proficiency with HTML, CSS and asynchronous JavaScript as required for the MTA exam that is part of the Apprenticeship qualification. Through a mixture of interactive seminars, pair programming and independent exercises, apprentices will cover WebSockets; web workers; Extensible Markup Language Hypertext Transfer Protocol (XML HTTP) Requests; canvas elements; media elements; responsive design through media queries; and error handling in Javascript.

Software Fit-for-users uses a mixture of on-the-job training and a two-week bootcamp to get apprentices to exam-standard proficiency with the software development lifecycle as required for the onprogramme assessment they take at this stage. Through a mixture of independent reading and a team project, apprentices will learn about both agile and waterfall development methodologies and experience 2 x 1-week sprints.

Full-Stack Projects uses a mixture of on-the-job training and a two-week bootcamp to get apprentices ready for End Point Assessment (EPA) for the 5-day synoptic project that forms part of the Apprenticeship EPA. Through completing two individual projects, apprentices will be prepared for the demands of the EPA synoptic project.
